Defective coin puzzle

Write e-mail

You are given 8 identical coins and one of them is defective(heavier or lighter) than others, others weighing exactly the same. A simple balance is provided to you and coins can be placed on both sides. You have been provided with two cases:

  1. Firstly, the defect is known. Lets assume the defect is that the coin is heavier. In this case, how many maximum weighings are needed to find out the defective coin.
  2. Secondly, the defect is unknown. In this case, how many weighings need to be done to find out the defect and the defective coin.
